Forest management, or silviculture, is the art and science of treating a forest to promote a desired outcome. The skilled forester uses their knowledge of silvics (i.e. principles of tree and forest biology and development) to acheive goals set forth by the landowner or society. A treatment can be cutting trees, applying herbicides, planting seeds or seedlings, setting controlled fires, etc.
